Bortoleto's 80-place penalty: how Audi's component changes sent him to the back in Austin

Gabriel Bortoleto will start the United States Grand Prix from the back of the grid after the FIA confirmed a further 60-place penalty on Saturday, on top of 20 places from Friday. Audi fitted a string of new power unit parts beyond his season allocation.
A penalty that adds up to 80 places
Gabriel Bortoleto qualified 13th at the Circuit of the Americas, but that will count for nothing on Sunday. The Audi driver carries an 80-place grid penalty, a total so large that the stewards' document needed an accumulation line to explain it. The sanction was reported by PlanetF1 and GPFans, and The Race has described it as believed to be a record.
The penalty came in two steps. On Friday, the FIA announced 20 places after Bortoleto took a fourth energy store and a fourth control electronics unit, when only three of each are allowed per season. Each breach costs 10 places.
What changed on Saturday
On Saturday, Audi fitted more components to his car. According to the FIA's decision as quoted by GPFans and PlanetF1, a fifth engine, a fifth turbocharger, a fifth exhaust set, a fourth MGU-K and a seventh power unit ancillary component each carried a 10-place penalty. A fifth energy store and a fifth control electronics unit added five places each, because they are repeat breaches. The FIA's wording: "Therefore there is an accumulation of 60 places."
Together with Friday's 20 places, that makes 80. A driver cannot drop more than the length of the grid, so the practical effect is simple: Bortoleto starts last, in 22nd place. The stewards also noted that the penalty applies only if he is classified in qualifying, which he was.
Why the number matters less than it looks
Once a penalty exceeds the number of cars on the grid, the extra places have no further effect. Audi has in effect treated the Austin weekend as a chance to fit a whole set of fresh parts at once, accepting the grid position as the price. Teams sometimes make that choice when a car is unlikely to fight for points from its qualifying slot anyway, although Audi has not explained its reasoning in the reports we have seen.
By the numbers
Our race data shows Bortoleto has taken part in 17 races this season. He has scored 10 points, with a best finish of eighth, which he achieved twice. His last three races brought a 15th place in Baku, 18th in Kuala Lumpur and no classified result in Singapore. His teammate Nico Hulkenberg has 11 points from the same 17 races, with a best finish of eighth.
On Saturday the stewards also issued Bortoleto a warning for impeding Lewis Hamilton in final practice, which carries no grid penalty.
What comes next
The race starts at 20:00 UTC on Sunday. From the back row, Bortoleto's most realistic target is to move up through the field on strategy and tyre wear, with the new parts fitted for the remaining races of the season.
