Why Russell's Austin penalty was halved to five seconds

Stewards gave George Russell a five-second penalty for leaving the track at Turn 12 on lap one, half the usual 10 seconds, citing a first-lap fight with two cars. He finished eighth, and Antonelli's title stayed open.

The incident

George Russell's race in Austin was shaped by the first lap. He started sixth, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris behind him, and kept both McLarens back through the approach to Turn 12. He went off the track at the sharp left-hander, rejoined at Turn 13 and still held his place. The stewards decided that this had given him an advantage.

According to RacingNews365, Russell's engineer Marcus Dudley told him he was under investigation. Russell replied that he was on the inside and that Piastri was overtaking on the outside. The stewards did not agree.

Why five seconds, not ten

Under the usual guidelines, leaving the track and gaining a lasting advantage is a 10-second penalty. PlanetF1 reports that the stewards halved it. They cited two things: Russell was fighting Isack Hadjar and Piastri at the same time, and the pressure he put on Hadjar had left Piastri in an attacking position. They also stressed that it was a first-lap incident.

Russell later pitted to serve the five seconds and switch to hard tyres, the FIA race report says. He finished eighth, 54.303 seconds behind Antonelli after the penalty, behind Norris in fifth and Piastri in seventh.

What it meant for the title

The result mattered beyond one point. Autosport reports that Antonelli needed Russell to finish ninth or lower, and Hamilton fifth or lower, to be champion in Austin. Russell's eighth place kept him alive, 123 points behind his team-mate. A win in Mexico City with Antonelli no higher than tenth is what he needs to stay in the fight.

By the numbers

Russell has won three of the 18 races this season, against nine for Antonelli. The next chance to respond is the Mexico City Grand Prix on 1 November at 21:00 Vienna time.
