Cadillac extends Sergio Perez's contract until at least 2029

Cadillac has announced a new deal with Sergio Perez that runs until at least the end of 2029, on the eve of his home race in Mexico City. It fills the first of the team's two 2027 seats and leaves Valtteri Bottas's future open.
A home-race announcement
Cadillac picked its moment carefully. On Wednesday, two days before first practice in Mexico City, the team confirmed that Sergio Perez will stay with it until at least 2029, giving the Mexican a contract that outlasts the initial deal he signed to join the newcomer for 2026.
According to The Race, the wording of the announcement is "until at least 2029", and the publication understands that this includes the 2029 season. PlanetF1 reports that financial terms were not disclosed. Cadillac chief executive Dan Towriss said that building a competitive team in Formula 1 is a long-term journey, and framed Perez's talent and leadership as the continuity the team needs.
A milestone weekend
The timing also fits a personal landmark. The Race and PlanetF1 both note that Perez is due to make his 300th Grand Prix start in Mexico, which would make him the seventh driver to reach that number. If he stays through 2029, it would be his 18th season in the sport.
Perez returned to the grid in 2026 after a year away, and the Cadillac project was widely described as the reason. The Race says his and Bottas's original contracts were not thought to run beyond 2027.
The picture in the data
It has been a tough first season for the new team. In our race data, Perez has been classified in 13 of the 18 races so far and has not scored a point; his best finish is 14th, which he managed three times (Barcelona, Silverstone and Baku). Bottas has also finished without points, with 13th in Shanghai as his best result.
The Race says Perez holds a marginal qualifying edge over his team-mate and a clearer advantage in race pace, while Bottas argues that the comparison is unfair because the two cars did not always carry the same parts in a team's first season under new rules.
What happens next
The extension settles one of Cadillac's two seats for 2027. The other remains open. Reports name Bottas and development driver Colton Herta as the main candidates, with Frederik Vesti and Yuki Tsunoda among other names mentioned by The Race; Cadillac has not committed to Bottas beyond this season. Team principal Marcin Budkowski has said nothing to confirm a name. The first chance to see the Mexican in the car with his new contract is Friday's practice at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
